Heated discussion

  [12/032016]

There was a heated discussion about people who self-diagnose and self-proclaim of having a certain illnesses, usually mental illness.

It all began when one lady admitted publicly on social media that she suffered depression, anxiety and social anxiety. It is a rare sight and occasion for this to happen, though.

I find that the discussion should be taken seriously and with precaution. First and foremost, if I were to be asked of my own opinions, no, I do not like people who self-diagnose, but then again thinking back about it, our lack of awareness and understanding of mental illness and mental health itself has caused this problem to prolong.

I find it unfair to only blame the people who self-diagnose for their unethical diagnosis. I find it to be cruel to bash them for their lack of understanding and awareness. For all we know, their diagnosis might be true! Rather than bashing them out about it, why not take that chance and help and educate them while they're at the topic? Sometimes these people self-diagnose just to understand why they act a certain way. Some who self-diagnose are aware they do not have the illness itself, but it's a coping system to them.

What I don't like even more would be when these self-diagnose people begin to create a bad image of the mental illness that the so proclaim they have. Their contradicting behavior prior of the DSM-V would further undermine the true meaning of the mental illness itself, thus worsening what so little of awareness we have about mental illness.

What we need is a community that understands and a community that is willing to learn and educate themselves about mental illness and mental health. We need to learn to see the views of other parties in this matter as well as our own. Simply making judgements and making it a heated debate based only on your opinions and views would be too biased and invalid!

I pity those who were clinically diagnosed with mental illness now. Without having to be involved, they are the people who are trapped in between us. Why not we just try and help others understand more about their illness rather than finding fault in others?

I guess it all goes back to the system.
